The Audition

So now the casting director or producer want you to come in for an audition. What are the dos and don’ts, and what can you expect?

The first of all the auditioning tips is to become aware of the part your playing well. Is this actually in your realm of acting? Do you think that you are a fit the role? Preparation is always key for auditioning. You may not need to have your lines memorized but at least have a sense of what it is you’ll be saying and the tone. Always arrive early, actors are notorious for flaking and being late, so set your self apart.

Also be sure to dress properly for your audition...

- While most likely you wont have to be in costume for your part but don’t dress too far from the role.

- You want the director to be able to visualize you as his character.

- Wear something comfortable so you can move around and use your body language if necessary for the reading.

Politeness and professionalism are also important part of auditioning. Keep in mind these people are going to have to work very closely with you for the duration of this project. Any director would much rather work with a person who is professional, reliable, and tolerable. And you never know directors may cast you for future projects because of your professionalism and positive attitude.

Finally, this is your chance to wow the person or persons who are going to be making the decision of whether or not you’re going to be a part of this project. You only get one chance to make a first impression and this is it. One mistake could put your headshot and resume in the trash pile. With all this in mind and all the pressure your probably feeling you should relax and have fun. Directors and casting directors can sense nervousness and tension and it could throw off your performance. Remember you’re an actor, an artist, you have to be yourself, express yourself and be free. But most of all your in this audition for one very good reason, you enjoy acting, so have fun.
