Thanksgiving - A Time for Remembrance

Thanksgiving is usually celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November by homes all across America.Thanksgiving Day is traditionally celebrated with gatherings, feasts and reflections on what people are thankful for.. Thanksgiving is also marked with Thanksgiving parades, special sales at local shopping malls, harvest-colored decorations and card exchanging. Thanksgiving signifies the beginning of the holiday season which ends with the ringing in of the New Year!

Originally, Thanksgiving began with the Puritans in 1621. After a long, hard winter the Puritans were grateful to have food. The native Indians befriended the Puritans and taught them how to live off the land during these difficult times. It is believed that the Puritans and the native Indians shared this first Thanksgiving together as a sign of peace between these two parties. American Indians shared the peace pipe with their Puritan friends, and the Puritans shared a turkey dinner with them.

Today Thanksgiving is celebrated with an emphasis on family. Turkey dinners, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn and pumpkin pies are the traditional spread at the table. It is a time for giving thanks and also for sharing with those who are in need. Games are played, some communities conduct skits as a remembrance of the first Thanksgiving and some people just simply watch the parades or a football game on television. Family members will often take the time to express their thanks for one another.. It's a time for knitting closer bonds with one another.
