Mother’s Day Gifts Your Kids Can Make

by Teresa, The CuteKid™ Staff

Growing up my mother always helped us make gifts for our grandmother’s for Mother’s
Day. Now I help my children do the same thing. They love getting creative and their
grandmothers love the homemade gifts. Here are some great Mother’s Day ideas for kids that you can use with your own little ones.

Decorative Soap – Grandma will love this soap too much that she may never use it. The secret to keeping the picture intact is the thin coating of wax. My son made some for his grandmas and they turned out so cute.

You will need: soap, paint, paintbrush, paraffin wax, colored paper, crayons.

Directions:

  1. Use the paintbrush to paint a design or picture on one side of the bar of soap. Let the paint dry completely.

  2. Melt the wax according to the package directions.

  3. Use a paintbrush to spread the melted wax over the picture on the soap. Be sure to cover the entire painted area. As the wax cools it will harden.

  4. Cut a piece of paper large enough to wrap around the box of soap. Then let your child design a label. Put the soap back in the box and wrap it up.

Coasters – If you have really young children it can be hard to find something that they can easily make. But this gift is simple enough for your one year old to make.

You will need: cardstock, crayons.

Directions:

  1. Cut out squares of cardstock about 3 in wide and long.

  2. Then allow your little one to color a picture.

  3. Take the squares to the copy store and have them laminated. Cut the squares out leaving about 1/4 in edge of laminate around each square. Voila instant coasters.

Chocolate truffles – Every woman loves truffles and these simple chocolate delights will be sure to please. My kids love rolling the chocolate into balls. They are best hand delivered to prevent melting.

You will need: 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1 1/4 cup chocolate chips (white, semi-sweet, or milk) Toppings: cocoa, shredded coconut, powdered sugar, chopped nuts, melted chocolate (white, milk, or dark)

Directions:

  1. Heat the cream in a small pan until it starts to bubble.

  2. Reduce the heat to low and add the chocolate chips. Stir until completely melted. (This should be done by an adult.)

  3. Put the chocolate mixture in a bowl and cover. Put in the fridge for about 2 hours.

  4. Choose your truffle toppings and place them in small bowls.

  5. Use your hands to roll the chocolate mixture into small balls about 1 inch. Then roll each ball into a topping of choice.

  6. Put the truffles back in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

  7. They will keep for a few days in the fridge. Makes about 1 dozen truffles.
Optional: Add 1/4 – 1/2 tsp orange or peppermint extract when the chocolate is melted.

Bath Salt– For those women who enjoy soaking in a warm bath this is the perfect gift.

You will need: Epsom salts, essential oil, baking soda (softens skin), glycerin (moisturizes skin) can be found at health food stores, food coloring, jar or bag

Directions:

  1. Pour 2 cups Epsom salts into a large bowl.

  2. Add 10-12 drops of essential oil, 2 TB of glycerin, and 2 TB baking soda and stir.

  3. Put in a jar or bag.

  4. You can paint the jar lid and tie with a ribbon.

  5. Add a label that says something like, “For a relaxing bath add several tablespoons of bath salt to warm water.”

Note: You don’t have to include the glycerin

Remember the mother’s day gift from kids doesn’t have to be perfect; it is the thought that counts. Grandma will love it just because her grandchildren made it.
