Birthday Party Tips

For most kids, celebrating their birthday is a big deal. But throwing a kids birthday party can seem like a daunting task. Here are some kids birthday party tips to help you in throwing a party for your younger child.

Children under the age of three do not need a large kids birthday party. They are too young to play games and wouldn’t want to take turns anyway. If your child is under three consider just having a family party with a few relatives or close friends. Don’t worry about playing games or organizing activities. Just blow up a few balloons and hang them along with some streamers for decorations. Let your child blow out the candles and serve everyone cake and ice cream. Then just let the children play. Open presents at the end, unless you think your child will be willing to share their new toys.

Once your child is in pre-school they will begin to make friends with other children their age. Depending upon the child they may enjoy a kids birthday party at this age. My son had his first birthday party at age four. We played a few games then took a trip to the fire station. When planning a kids birthday party consider the interests of your child. If he prefers to sit and do quiet activities don’t plan a lot of active games. Instead do a few crafts activities and more sedentary games like bingo.

For school-age children a birthday is a big deal. It means they are a year older and can do more things. Birthdays are also discussed more. You don’t have to throw a kids birthday party every year. In our family our children get a friend birthday party every other year with just a family birthday party on the odd year.

My son does not like girls. So instead of inviting is entire class to his birthday party I select a few of his friends and send them invitations to their homes. I like to limit the party to less than 12 children total including my own. If you have more than this it becomes too hard to handle without adult help. There are also too many children to all play a game at the same time.

Consider the cost when planning a destination birthday party for kids. If you invite a lot of kids be prepared for them to all show up. If you do not have the money then plan a birthday party at home. Sometimes home parties can be more fun because the kids have a chance to interact more instead of with the activities at the destination. For example my son went to a party at a fun center after opening the presents and eating cake and ice cream the kids split up and we never saw the birthday boy again.

Don’t over plan the party. Plan three to four activities and games. I like to plan one craft activity and then a variety of games like a scavenger hunt, pin the tail, or racing game. Then allow time for the children to play. If the game is inside you could offer them balloons to throw around, outside they can just run around. For my son’s dinosaur birthday party I made a cave using my couches and they all had dinosaur masks. So they played dinosaurs.

Choosing a theme can help you in planning the activities. There are a lot of theme birthday party ideas than can be found on-line with ideas for games, decorations, and food. But make sure that your child is involved in choosing the theme. Don’t just assume you know what they want, because the last thing you want to do is disappoint your child.

Above all birthday parties should be fun. Start planning a few months before your child’s birthday to alleviate the stress and ensure that you have thought of everything.
