Problem Solving Competitions
by Teresa, The CuteKid™ Staff
Is your child creative and good at solving problems? Then they would be an ideal
candidate for a problem solving competition like Destination Imagination or Odyssey of
the Mind. Problem solving competitions help children by:
Oftentimes schools participate in problem solving competitions. When I taught school I was the coach of an Odyssey of the Mind team. We held auditions and used a number of activities that tested children's creative thinking and ability to work together. From those who tried out we put together a team of students that met together after school two days a week. They weren't necessarily the smartest kids but they were willing to work hard and had a knack for problem solving. Our group didn't win any competitions but they did accomplish something that they could be proud of. They learned to work together and increased their self-confidence. If your school does not participate in a problem solving competition ask them to consider this problem solving activity for children. Every school has money put aside for gifted and talented programs and problem solving competitions qualify. If your child's school does not offer the program and you feel your child would excel and benefit from being involved don't despair. Anyone can put together a group and compete in the competitions. It does require a fee of around $100 to sign-up. You can put together a team of kids in your area and coach them yourself. Then watch in awe as your child creates and solves the challenge at the next problem solving competition. Read other related articles: |
