Make Homemade Applesauce
by Teresa, The CuteKid™ Staff
Every year with the onset of fall my mother would buy apples and we would spend a few days making homemade applesauce, apple pie filling, and dried
apple slices. I always enjoyed helping mash the apples. Making homemade applesauce can be a lot of fun for the entire family. The best
thing is you get to eat it when you are done.
You will need
6 medium apples*
1 cup water
½ cup sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
1 cinnamon stick
*Note: Certain types of apples like Red Delicious do not make very good applesauce. For the best
applesauce use a combination of apples that are both tart and sweet. Sweet apples that are
delicious in applesauce include Golden Delicious and Gravenstein. Tart varieties include Granny
Smith, Jonathan, and Newtown Pippin.
Directions
- Peel and core all of the apples. If you have an apple corer peeler
children can help turn the handle. If not a parent will need to do this part
using a knife.
- Cut the apple into slices and place them in a large saucepan. Add the
rest of the ingredients.
- Bring the apple mixture to a boil. Once it is boiling cover the pan and
turn down the heat on the stove to low. Let the mixture simmer for about
20-30 minutes or until the apples are soft.
- Remove the cinnamon stick then mash the apples. For a chunkier
applesauce use a potato masher to mash the apples. If you want your
applesauce smoother use an electric mixer or food grinder to mash them.
- Once mashed place the applesauce in the refrigerator to cool. When it is
cool you can put it in the freezer and freeze for up to a year or bottle it
using a canner.
Recipe makes about 3 cups of homemade applesauce.
