Go Dancing

by Teresa, The CuteKid™ Staff

As a couple isn’t always easy to find something that you can both enjoy doing, will bring you closer together, and at the same time benefit your health. Yet dancing can do all three
things.

Couple dancing is a very personal thing. As a couple moves out onto the dance floor the woman has to willingly submit to the lead of the man. At the same time the man has to
guide the woman through the steps. If the woman is unwilling to be led or the man fails to guide her they will not succeed. So dancing is a great way to learn to work together.

I recently read a comment about dancing that I really liked. It basically stated that when couple dance, they can express love without saying anything at all. Types of dances like the waltz allow you to gaze into your partner’s eyes and express your love and trust with out words.

For many men the idea of dancing can be terrifying. (Usually us women find the idea a lot more enjoyable.) I remember when I was younger that my dad balked at the idea of dancing. He just didn’t feel like he would be any good at it and he didn’t want to fail. After I got married my mom finally talked him into talking ballroom dance lessons. After he got over his initial fears, he was pleasantly surprised to find that he actually enjoyed it. Dancing was a great way for he and my mom to connect, just the two of them. Now they frequently go dancing together.

I took a ballroom dance class in college and loved it. When I first got married I tried to convince my husband to take a class with me. He was reluctant. Now that we’ve been married ten years he thinks dancing would be fun. Unfortunately we have to wait a few years until my oldest son is able to baby-sit before we take a class together. But you can bet as soon as he is I will be signing us up for an evening ballroom dance class at the local university.

Not only can dancing bring you closer together as a couple but it also has health benefits. Dancing helps improve balance and flexibility, keeps bones strong, and can chemically lift your mood. Plus when you are dancing you can burn 200-400 calories an hour depending upon the style of the dance. Obviously with faster dances like the swing you will burn more calories than with slower dances like the waltz. But either way dancing can have great benefits for your health.

So next time you are trying to think of something to do as a couple consider signing up for dance lessons.
