For many families the winter season snow brings fun for entire family. As
parents we often dread the icy roads, cold temperatures, and shoveling that
snow brings with it. But for children snow is a wondrous thing.
One year when we actually were hit with about eight inches of snow my son
and I went outside and played for a few hours. We built a snowman of course
then went to work on a fort. After building the fort we had a snowball fight,
but instead of fighting each other we protected our castle against evil,
invading, invisible knights. We both had a great time. It is still an
experience that my son talks about.
This year we have had little snow so when we decided to take the family
sledding we debated where to go. We finally decided on the mountain range
southwest of our home. We piled in my husband’s jeep and drove up into the
mountains. After about an hour we hit snow. As soon as we got out of the
vehicle my youngest daughter headed up the mountain. When I finally caught up
with her I tried to convince her to go sledding. But she replied, “I just want
to climb.” After a while she decided sledding looked fun too.
We all had a great time sledding down the hill and exploring the area. Although
one of us had to keep an eye on my youngest all the time because she kept
wandering off, trying to explore the wilderness.
We even ran across some deer tracks. When I explained that a deer made them my
youngest daughter perked up. “Reindeer? Santa’s reindeer?” she asked. I tried
to explain that they were regular deer but she was sure they were Santa’s. She
had to call her brother and her sister to see the tracks too.
We did have to drive quite a while to get to the snow, but it was worth it. I
took plenty of pictures and videotape so we can look back on the experience. So
if you are wondering what you can do as a family this winter, try finding some
snow. If you don’t have your own snow gear ask around and see if you can borrow
some. The experience that you will have and memories that you will make will be
well worth the drive. If you do have snow close remember to take advantage of it
and have some fun with family in the snow.
