Easy and Frugal Christmas Decorating Ideas

by Teresa, The CuteKid™ Staff

Christmas can seem so daunting with a list of things to do a mile long. So make it a little easier on yourself and use some of these frugal and easy Christmas decorating craft ideas.

Wrap up some Christmas decorations. Fill your house with festive decorations made from wrapping paper and bows.

  • Gather empty boxes or cans and wrap them with wrapping paper. Add bows or ribbons to make them beautiful. Stack them in an empty corner or place them on a table. Try wrapping cereal boxes or get larger boxes from your local grocery store.

  • Wrap up existing artwork and then hang it back on your wall. Voila an instant Christmas decoration.

  • Wrap small boxes and place them on a coffee table, use them as a centerpiece, or as place cards for a party.

  • Christmas decorations can be expensive so use some of these frugal Christmas ideas to help ease your budget.

Plan ahead After Christmas all of the season items go on sale. Shop the sales and stock up for the next year.

Buy used There are many used items that are for sale on E-bay and other online sellers. Yard sales are also a good place to find used holiday items.

Use cards Save the Christmas cards that you received the year before and use them to decorate. Tape them to doors, cupboards, and windows. You can also display them on your mantle or coffee table.

Light it up Strings or lights are very inexpensive and can really brighten up the room. I strung lights on the grapevine above my cupboards for an instant and inexpensive decoration.

Make your decorations Go for a homey feel and make your Christmas decorations. String popcorn or cranberries and decorate your tree or wall. Let your children make paper chains. Make some homemade play dough and cut out Christmas shapes, bake, and then paint them. Try hanging sugar cookies around your house. Use a straw to poke a hole in the dough and then bake them until they are crispy.

Hang garlands Garlands are a simple and inexpensive way to fill up a space. Use them on mantles, handrails, or around in a doorway. You could also hand one on a wall and then clip Christmas cards to it when they arrive.

Outdoor Christmas decorations can be expensive. So try some of these frugal ideas to extend Christmas out into your yard.

  • Paint round stepping-stones red and white to look like peppermints.

  • Paint a pool noodle to look like a candy cane with red and white stripes. Curve one end and hang it on an outside wall.

  • Make wood cutouts. Cut out a large star, Christmas tree, ornament, snowman, or candy cane out of wood. Paint it and put lights around it.

  • Decorate with gifts. Put a large rock in a cardboard box and then wrap the box with a vinyl or plastic tablecloth and add an outside bow.

  • Use some of these decorating ideas in your home this year and make the holidays a little easy and frugal.
