Networking Tools
When you are first starting out as an actor, model, or musician you must be your own agent, manager, and publicist. For those who do not have some extraordinary talent or look, you have to build up your resume and experience before the top industry professionals will even consider working with you. From day 1 you must market yourself before anyone else will. As with any marketing campaign you need your marketing materials.
You never know when you will run across someone who may have authority or a connection to the industry that may be able to help your career. One of the basics is a business card. A standard single sided business card with your name and contact info such as a phone number and email can suffice. This is just a way for someone you’ve met to contact you at a later date. For actors and models it may be beneficial to have a headshot or photo of yourself on your card along with your Union or Agency if you’re affiliated and have representation. Internet sites and web pages such as Myspace.com have become excellent tools for many people in the industry. These pages allow you to display music you’ve created, films, or photo shoots you’ve worked on. These individual pages can be used to promote one’s self 24 hours a day and can be personalized to a tee.
Models should always have an updated Zed card and portfolio on hand. Actors should always have their most recent resume and headshot. Musicians should never be without their most impressive demo. Even when you’re attending functions completely unrelated to the industry these materials must be kept close by even if it means in the trunk of your car. You never know when you may be shaking hands with the next Spielberg.
