How To Audition - Am I Talented Enough To Get CastAm I Talented Enough?
Here are some tips to help protect your blooming star:
First off if you’re really asking this question then you are already failing your audition. Let’s return to our Mantra from the first lesson in The Ultimate Audition Guide Win The Part.
“You deserve to get the part so believe in yourself – because if you don’t they won’t.”
Talent is not measurable on a fixed scale of 1 to 100. ‘Talent’ is something that is ‘relative’ in every audition and every production. What I mean by that is this: Your talent is only measured against the talent of the other people who are involved, not the whole world. Of course if you were to put the whole world in one audition then you’d fall somewhere from top to bottom but in reality you only have to worry about your immediate competition. Do you have what it takes to beat the others in the room? And remember – “You deserve the part…..”
Imagine though, for sake of argument that everyone in your audition is equally ‘talented’ and by that I mean their ‘performance abilities’ are all on a par. How does a director choose between them now? Simple, by factoring in the physical look he wants for his show and adding on the performer’s “Sparkle Rating” mentioned earlier.
Think of your audition like an exam. In an acting audition, for example, the director may award 60% of your marks based on your physical skills (acting, singing, dancing) but the other 40% for the way you deliver yourself in the audition – your ‘Sparkle Factor’.
Some people approach auditions with the arrogant attitude that they are the ‘best’, and because they ‘have the most talent’ they will get the part but you can easily beat these people to a part.
Their ‘ability’ might earn them a score of 5/6 but they are more likely to overlook the value of the ‘Sparkle Factor’ and only score 1/4 from the director there. In total they score 6/10 on their audition.
You enter the audition and only score a 3/6 on ‘ability’ but with the finely polished ‘Sparkle’ skills that you have practiced from this course you can ace the audition with a total 7/10 by scoring 4/4 on ‘Sparkle’ and getting the part.
You would be surprised how many potential lead actors and actresses I have seen lose a part they were capable of playing to another actor simply because they approached the audition with the wrong attitude.
Remember - even if you don’t think you’re the best in the world at what you do that doesn’t matter:
RULE #2 “Winning the Part is about learning to score better than the competition. And there is much you can do to improve you score regardless of ability.”
(If you do already think you are the best in the world BEWARE – it’s a long fall from up there! For the rest of us who know we’re not perfect you can learn how to trounce the competition in the ‘Sparkle’ stakes as discussed in detail in The Ultimate Audition Guide.
Until next time - Best of luck in your auditions,
