Help Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)

What is Shaken Baby Syndrome or SBS?

Unfortunately, this is the term given to the symptoms that result from violent shaking of an infant. This type of abuse usually happens after the caretaker gets stressed and frustrated while the baby is crying, and shakes the baby in order to stop it from crying. While not on purpose, the whiplash effect on the spinal cord and brain of the infant causes neurological damage.

Many babies are probably never brought in for treatment, but in just the United States alone, reports show that there are about 1500 shaken babies each year who are brought in for treatment. Of those young victims, more than 1/4 do not survive their injuries. Those that do survive, will have life-long mental problems due to this trauma on the brain.

This syndrome really can be prevented. In order to help reduce the fatalities from this, we need to share with others, in a loving way, how dangerous it is to shake a young developing child. The new father, mother, or babysitter must learn what the babys needs are and develop a lot of patience.

Many new parents find that having a baby around is more of a challenge than they anticipated. All babies will cry. Just because the infant is crying, does not necessarily mean that the you are doing anything wrong. Being that they cannot yet talk, they have no other way of communicating, except by crying.

I think that everyone, at some point in time, has been around a baby when he or she continues to cry. You checked the diaper, you fed the baby, you tried burping the baby, you checked the childs temperature, and you tried turning down the noise in the room...but the baby still goes on. This is when you need to take a big breath. Building tension will only stir the baby more. It could just be that the infant has gas or is starting to have teeth come through.

Some tips that you may want to try:

- SPEAK SOFTLY to the baby

- SING to the baby

- ROCK the baby

- MASSAGE the babys back

- OFFER A PACIFIER (but dont force it)

- PLAY SOFT MUSIC like classical, or nursery music

- WALK the baby in a stroller

- ENTERTAIN the baby

But if all else fails, just remember that babies cannot cry forever.

And every mother or father that I have spoken with, young or old, shares the belief that raising children is worth it in the end.
